In a move that will impact North Central Washington, Boeing picked South Carolina over the Puget Sound area for its second 787 assembly line. Boeing had been negotiating with the Machinists Union in hopes of getting a no strike clause in their contract in exchange for a second production line for the 787.
Certainly the decision makes sense for Boeing, who has experienced several expensive shut downs due to strikes over the last decade. In my opinion, the Machinists’ decision is a great example of shooting their own foot off. I would not be surprised if the Puget Sound area won’t see many, if any, more future Boeing airplanes to build.
